POWER
Fired Up or Burned Out?
INTRODUCTION
During Jesus’ final days with His disciples, He told them about the coming of the One whom God the Father will send to be their Helper. He was referring to the Holy Spirit. Without the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit in us, it would be impossible to live as Jesus’ disciple and disciple maker.
JOHN 14: 16
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.
WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRT?
THE PERSON
The Holy Spirit is the third Person in the Trinity.
Being a Person, He exhibits all the elements involved in a personality - mind (Romans 8:27), emotions (Ephesians 4:30), and will (1 Corinthians 12:11).
Being God, He possesses all the absolute attributes belonging to God alone. Like the Father and Son, He is omnipotent (Luke 1:35), omniscient (Isaiah 40:13-14), omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-12) and eternal (Hebrews 9:14).
WHAT DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT DO?
THE POWER
At the moment of our salvation, the Holy Spirit immediately indwells us. The Holy Spirit is in us to help us in many ways. One important work He does, is giving us the power we need to live our Christian life.
SPIRITUAL CHARACTER — He gives us the power to live godly lives.
He transforms us into the likeness of Jesus.
2 CORINTHIANS 3:18
And we , who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
He produces His fruit in our character.
Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
SUPERNATURAL CAPABILITES — He gives us the power to do God’s work.
He enables us to serve others through spiritual gifts.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:7
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
He empowers us to win the lost for Christ.
Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
HOW CAN I RECEIVE THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?
THE PROMISE
The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is an empowering experience that is distinct from the indwelling that happens at conversion. Some refer to this as being filled with the Holy Spirit. We can receive this promise by:
ASKING IN FAITH
LUKE 1 1 :13
If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
LAYING ON OF HANDS
ACTS 19:6
When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
